The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 一百多年来有如此多优秀的电影，这个问题的答案受限于这个季节，我现在的情绪。

当纠结于尼古拉斯·凯奇的真人属性与演技名头是否副实时，才会明白这个片名叫这个的原因：一个天才巅峰不再，真的是非常痛苦的，哪怕曾经拥有，依然很难返回或达到另一个巅峰

剧组的钱是不是都用来买尼古拉斯凯奇的周边了喂！
后面好严肃来着，为什么不能把乐子贯穿全片。
低于预期
“永远，别把自己的人生搞砸。”
三星半，多半星给凯奇本人。作为连续多年啃他烂片（以各种奇怪的独立电影为重灾区）的我这个观众而言能再一次看到他主役这种院线喜剧甚是欣慰。成片并没有预期无聊，但只是感觉又多看了一部《憨豆特工》而已，抛去电影里凯奇自我调侃的成分来看它带给我的惊喜甚至还没有《威利游乐园》多。
情怀感满分，谁不爱凯奇叔，而且一上来就是两个？！

剧本的设计点是有趣的，但剧情走向还是老套，虽是尼古拉斯凯奇的角色与现实互文，但更多是沉浸在电影里戏中戏的表演和各种对以往自己电影的彩蛋和吐槽，凯奇的演技其实一直在线，不过我更喜欢佩德罗帕斯卡的表演，有些对话和镜头其实也蛮有意思，以及故事中心突出“过气”演员的一丝心酸和自嘲，也带点韵味，凯奇哥，后面你要支愣起来啊！
PS:很欣慰cage大叔也爱Paddington2，希望他可以参演Paddington3🐻
